By Chelsea: There’s more hiding inside a pumpkin than a handful of seeds and enough orange goo to make you question your life choices.

Every autumn, pumpkins make their grand appearance on porches, kitchen counters, and front steps everywhere. Most people see cheerful seasonal decorations, potential pies, or the unfortunate victims of amateur carving experiments. Witches, however, see something entirely different.

They see vessels of protection, symbols of prosperity, and hundreds of tiny seeds containing the promise of new beginnings.

Pumpkins have become popular ingredients in modern seasonal witchcraft, particularly in spellwork involving abundance, fertility, spiritual protection, and transformation. And while they may not have the mysterious reputation of mandrake roots or belladonna, their magickal symbolism is surprisingly rich.

Sometimes, the most useful witchcraft ingredients are hiding in plain sight, right between the cinnamon sticks and the Halloween candy you’ve already eaten twice.

Why Pumpkins Belong in the Witch’s Kitchen

Pumpkins originated in the Americas, where Indigenous peoples cultivated various squash species thousands of years before European settlement. Their importance as nourishing foods that could be stored for long periods eventually made them natural symbols of survival, harvest, and abundance.

In contemporary witchcraft, pumpkins are frequently associated with the element of Earth because of their connection to agriculture, fertility, and material prosperity.

Their golden-orange colour also lends itself to magick involving success, vitality, creativity, and personal empowerment.

Perhaps most interestingly, pumpkins embody the entire cycle of manifestation. A single seed produces a sprawling vine, flowers, fruit, and eventually hundreds of additional seeds.

If that isn’t a spectacular metaphor for multiplying blessings, I don’t know what is.

Pumpkin Seeds and the Magick of Multiplication

Pumpkin seeds are particularly valuable in symbolic spellwork because they represent potential that has yet to manifest.

Think of them as tiny promises waiting for the right conditions.

In prosperity rituals, dried pumpkin seeds can be combined with cinnamon, basil, cloves, or coins inside a small charm bag. Each ingredient symbolically contributes to the intention of attracting opportunities and encouraging financial growth.

For creative endeavours, seeds can be placed on an altar beside written goals, business plans, or artistic projects.

One particularly meaningful practice involves writing an intention on biodegradable paper and burying it beneath a planted pumpkin seed.

As the plant grows, it becomes a living reminder to nurture that goal through consistent action.

Of course, if your pumpkin vine grows faster than your business, perhaps it’s time to reconsider your marketing strategy.

The Hollow Pumpkin as a Magickal Vessel

One of the pumpkin’s most interesting characteristics is its hollow interior.

In symbolic spellwork, hollow objects can represent receptivity, containment, and the ability to hold an intention.

A cleaned pumpkin can serve as a temporary ritual vessel for gratitude offerings, written affirmations, or symbolic representations of things you wish to release.

For example, during autumn cleansing rituals, practitioners might write unwanted habits, fears, or limiting beliefs on small pieces of paper and place them inside a pumpkin.

"Talk

The pumpkin then represents transformation and the natural process of letting go.

When the ritual is complete, remove any non-compostable materials and dispose of the pumpkin responsibly.

It’s a symbolic way of telling the universe that certain things have overstayed their welcome.

Preferably without having to change the locks.

Jack-o’-Lanterns and Spiritual Protection

The familiar jack-o’-lantern has connections to Irish folklore, particularly stories surrounding Stingy Jack and the practice of carving lanterns from turnips.

In North America, pumpkins eventually replaced turnips, creating the Halloween tradition we recognise today.

Modern witches sometimes reinterpret these carved faces as protective symbols intended to discourage unwanted influences.

Instead of carving a conventional face, you might incorporate personal protective sigils, meaningful symbols, or designs representing strength and spiritual boundaries.

Place the finished pumpkin near your doorway with a battery-operated candle inside.

Consider it a seasonal guardian with excellent kerb appeal.

A Pumpkin Seed Spell for New Opportunities

For a simple autumn manifestation ritual, gather five dried pumpkin seeds, a small bowl, a pinch of cinnamon, and a written intention.

Place the seeds inside the bowl and sprinkle them lightly with cinnamon.

Hold your hands above the bowl and visualise five opportunities opening before you.

Speak the following words:

“Seeds of promise, seeds of gold,

Awaken the blessings yet untold.

Through patient hands and actions true,

May opportunities blossom anew.”

Keep the seeds somewhere meaningful for five days. Afterwards, plant them when conditions permit or return them to the earth.

Remember that ritual intention works best when accompanied by real-world effort.

The universe may appreciate symbolism, but it probably isn’t updating your résumé.

The Sacred Lesson of the Pumpkin

Beyond its usefulness in contemporary spellwork, the pumpkin offers a beautiful lesson about the cycles of life.

Growth requires patience. Harvests require preparation. And even the most magnificent pumpkin eventually returns to the earth, leaving its seeds behind.

Whether you’re practising prosperity magick, creating seasonal protection charms, or simply honouring the abundance already present in your life, pumpkins remind us that endings and beginnings are intimately connected.

So, the next time you’re elbow-deep in pumpkin pulp, resist the temptation to throw everything away.

Those slippery little seeds might symbolise the very beginnings you’ve been waiting for.

Besides, any magickal ingredient that can double as a roasted snack deserves a permanent place in the witch’s kitchen.
