These twelve nights fall during the darkest part of the year, offering a sacred space to reflect on the past year and look forward to the one to come. They are nights of profound darkness, when time seems suspended, allowing for purification, meditation, fortune-telling, and introspection. These holy nights have traditionally held deep meaning and are rich with stories.<\/p>\n

Weihnachten<\/p>\n

The German word for Christmas, Weihnachten, provides insight into this tradition. It doesn\u2019t refer to just one night, but to several holy nights. Weihnachten originates from the twelve holy nights, also called the Smoke Nights or Rough Nights. During these nights, no work or washing was permitted. These were nights outside of time, meant for reflection and preparation for what was to come.<\/p>\n

Outside of Time: Where Do the Twelve Nights Come From?<\/p>\n

The twelve nights arise from the difference between a solar year and a lunar year. A solar year\u2014from winter solstice to winter solstice\u2014takes 365 \u00bc days. A lunar month lasts approximately 29.53 days, varying slightly from 29.27 to 29.83 days. Twelve lunar months, or twelve new moons, total 354 days. This creates a difference of roughly 11 \u00bc days. These extra days, when divided into nights, approximate twelve nights\u2014a calculation our ancestors understood well.<\/p>\n

When Does It Begin?<\/p>\n

There are different ways to count the twelve holy nights (also called thirteen holy days):<\/p>\n

Fixed Midwinter: Begins the night leading up to Midwinter, from December 20th to 21st.<\/p>\n

Scandinavian tradition: Midwinter is celebrated on December 23rd, so the first Rauhnacht begins the night of December 22nd to 23rd.<\/p>\n

Christian tradition: Begins on Christmas Eve, the night of December 24th to 25th.<\/p>\n

Germany: They begin on Christmas Day, December 25th to 26th.<\/p>\n

England: Begins on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

Meaningful Dreams<\/p>\n

Each night corresponds to a month in the coming year, so pay attention to your dreams. Write them down in the morning and see what insights they may offer for that month. Each night also carries its own significance, which can be supported with ceremony and meditation. Rituals don\u2019t need to occur at midnight\u2014night begins at sunset.<\/p>\n

Before the first night, it is important to perform a major purification. Prepare yourself and cleanse your space with smoke. <\/p>\n

Mother\u2019s Night: Honor the old sun in the mother\u2019s womb; celebrate at sunset with a ritual and a festive meal.<\/p>\n

Make offerings and let go of what no longer serves you.<\/p>\n

Step out of the old and into the new.<\/p>\n

Feel your life force.<\/p>\n

Purification Rituals<\/p>\n

Each night and day, perform purification rituals using smoke. These nights are called Smoke Nights for a reason. You can use sage, native mugwort, granulated incense, or create your own blend. For the first six nights, focus on shedding old wounds and closing the past year. For the second set of six nights, focus on wishes and intentions for the coming year.<\/p>\n

Place a plate of pastries, a glass of milk, and a few coins by the window or outside to maintain positive energy and ward off distractions.<\/p>\n
